Larry,

O5s were 5600 - 5607 Built by Baldwin in 1930
O5As were 5608 - 5635 Built by the West Burlington Shops 1936-1940
In 1950 and 1951, six O5As were converted to burn fuel oil and were
reclassed O5Bs

According to the October 1, 1952 Locomotive Assignment Sheet the following
had been rebuilt to burn fuel oil: 5614 and 5620 assigned to the McCook
Division and 5626, 5627, 5629, 5632 assigned to the Lincoln Division. By
February 1956 all were assigned to Lincoln.

5626 and 5627 were scrapped 11/1960
5614 was donated to St. Joseph, MO in 5/1962 (Still there)
5629 was donated to the Intermountain Chapter of the NRHS 9/1963 and placed
at the Colorado Railroad Museum (Still there)
5620 was sold for scrap 1/1966
5632 was sold to Dick Jensen 1/1966 and tragically cut up for scrap.

The easiest way to see the difference between the O5A and O5B is to look at
the tender. The oil burners have a fuel oil tank where the coal bunker used
to be and have a handrail that goes from the front to the rear of the
tender.

This is probably an old topic, but I have been watching the brass
Northerns sell for a little while,
I have seen most O5As's being coal fired and the O5Bs having oil, was
there any O5As that were rebuilt to fire oil?
And is there anyway of looking at the to tell if it's a rebuilt O5A?
