The wording was "until further notice, ........." ; He was the only engineer
I ever knew who would run a diesel standing up! (true steam engine engineer)
Bob hired-out at Aurora in 1923 at the age of 16 (he lied about his age).
Spent 25 years as a fireman before being promoted to engineer in 1948. Was
briefly a Road Foreman during WW II. Retired about June 1977 at age 70 yrs 4
mos. with 54 years of engine service. Always wore a "tie" to work; the same
tie he wore the day he hired out! Died in the late 80's or early 90's after
collecting every dime he ever paid into Railroad Retirement. "Mudcat" was
some character! He owned quite a few shares of the 2% publicly traded CB&Q
stock. I "fired" for him several trips on the Fox River Wayfreight when it
was a 16 hr job. After Award 282, in 1964, Bob would work his regular
engineer assignment on the "Northerns" one day and "hostle" at Aurora RH on
his "days off".
