Hi Steve:

Nest of confusion....good one, I'll have to use that. I call it the "fuhrer
bunker".

Actually, all the big bridges up here have wooden decks, the one at Whoop Up
Creek, (MP-506.5, Main 1) is not even ballasted deck, its a completly wooden
trestle. The concrete ties and concrete decks don't go together
well......nothin' gives, and the granite ballast eats the ties. When they
have a concrete deck bridge (or even a concrete culvert) they usually put in
a section of wooden ties over them. I guess on the big bridges, they figure
it's easier the other 'way 'round :>)

It looks like the next bridge to get the new concrete deck is on Main 1 (the
old main) at Joey's Arena (MP-523.8+/-). They've got all the B&B stuff
layin' there, and the parts are down in the back track at Pedro. That one's
just a re-deck job, it's already got concrete legs.

Back in '77, when I was brakin', my Con. and I set fire to the wooden
trestle on the East end of the Dewey siding. We were hookin' the burning
packing out of a hot box on the Local, and it came loose from the hook and
fell between the ties and onto the top of one of the bents. We got it put
out before it got serious, but it was exciting for a while :>)

Later,

Mike Decker
