<On the SP since corporate headquarters were in San Fransisco
everything headed toward SF was <headed west and everything headed
away from SF was headed east.
This esoteric fact is made even more interesting when one understands
that the SP's universal Milepost One was the SP headquarters office
building at the foot of Market St in SF. Its address (contrived some
years ago) was "One Market Street".
Note also that MIlepost One was probably at least 1.5 miles from
the nearest SP terminal in SF, and 6 or 7 miles (and the intervening
SF Bay) from its larger terminal in Oakland.
