I didn't originally submit the answer, but I believe you are right on the
money.
This kind of exchange was not uncommon, although the remoteness of the
location was probably unique.
I believe that No. 30 (Aksarben Zephyr) used to set a diner out at Chariton,
IA and it would be picked up by No. 3 in the early am to serve breakfast into
Omaha and Lincoln. Just an efficient use of equipment. Why drag an unused
car through the night to a terminal and then drag it back halfway across the
railroad before it got used again.
Ulm (My grandfather always said "ULUM")was where 42 and 43 usually met. Give
or take a station or two.
