Ed, Bill, and others: The discussion on the track elevation explains something I've never understood until now. The plan for Downers Grove Main Street station, showing the repairs made in 1947, shows a proposed track elevation at EL. 732.5', or approximately 12' above the floor elevation of EL. 720.6'. It looks like the depot floor was about 1 foot above top of rail, so someone was proposing a 13' track raise. That would have been quite a feat to accomplish under traffic with the number of trains running by the late 40's. Glen Haug |
