In WW1 the goverment took over the railroads and created the USRA. After the
war before the USRA could return the railroads they had to determine the value
of the railroads, so they did a valuation of them. They made invitories of
everything, drew maps and a lot of stuff. To make it easier they divided
railroads into sections. This information has been transferred to the National
Archives. There is a discussion on getting information from the Archives on
the DSP&P web site at: http://www.railway-eng.com/dspp/nasearch.htm
