Steve, the definitive reference on fluting so far (at least on pre-WWII
Budd cars, my own interest) is the two-part article "Crinkle Cut Cars" by
W. Gordon Anderson which appeared in the Jan and Feb 1991 "Mainline
Modeler". He goes into great detail about the evolution of the fluting
from the Pioneer Zephyr on.
