| Thread-topic: | [CBQ] Mineral red vs Indian red - which was more red (or brown)? |
Mike, my impression is that it's just the reverse, Indian Red has more red/maroon than mineral red, which lacks maroon and appears red oxide, not brown. I use Tru Color CB&Q Freight Car Red to paint my mineral red Q cars. As I understand it, Ed Hawkins was the color consultant to Tru Color for the formulation of this paint, and it is authentic. I collected old paint chips from depots in Donalsonville, IA, Winfield, IA, and Batavia, IL, and I was surprised that the colors were very close, but they all had oxidized and faded toward oxide red. I mixed a custom paint color using Poly Scale, which is no longer available. I made my own color chips for this mix and for Tru Color CB&Q Freight Car Red and attached a photo of the chips, taken with a Canon R7 under 5,000 K CRI 86 lighting. The chips, from top down are custom mix, Model Flex, and Tru Color. I included a color chip I made using Model Flex Maroon Tuscan Oxide Red, the depot color recommended by BRHS. I painted a scratchbuild model photo of the Hillsboro, IA depot painted with Model Flex. I find that the Model Flex color has too much maroon and not enough red oxide. I also included a color chip I made from Tru Color CB&Q Freight Car Red. Because Tru Color and Model Flex both dry glossy and Poly Scale dries matte, the chips can't be compared directly, but I think you will agree that the custom mix has more red tones than Tru Color. To support my impressions, I did RGB color analysis in Photoshop Elements with the following results: Custom Mix from Depot Paint Samples R=138, G=60, B=47 Model Flex Maroon Tuscan Oxide Red R=102, G=50, B=55 Tru Color CB&Q Freight Car Red R=94, G=37, B=243 These results support my impress that both the custom mix and Model Flex color have more red than Tru Color CB&Q Freight Car Red. I submitted the color chips for Indian Red and Bronze Green depot paint colors taken from the data sheet published in The Zephyr to AI and attached the results. I don't have a prototype Q boxcar color chip to submit, so AI can't compare them directly. Your choice of paint color for depots will depend upon the age of the depot paint color you wish to convey, from newly painted to oxidized and faded. The AI recommendations are listed in the table with the closest match at the top. Note that Model Flex is at the bottom of the list, and the Model Flex color is Oxide Red. This supports my impression that Model Flex Maroon Tuscan Oxide Red is a poor choice for modeling Indian Red.
