Greetings,
I wanted to inform you that Dave Bardy, longtime friend, lifelong CB&Q fan & O scale modeler, has passed away.
Dave was born and raised in Chicago. Dave’s father was a successful Charles Chips route salesman. While helping his dad with deliveries Dave had the unique opportunity of seeing firsthand the many railroads in Chicago making the transition from steam to diesel locomotives. A pause in the day’s deliveries offered a continual kaleidoscope of railroads unmatched in historical perspective.
Having grown up a short distance from Cicero yard, his after school bike ride became a daily routine that soon included the railroaders that shaped his lifelong historical perspective for details. Cab rides turned into a job opportunity.
Dave migrated to the St.Paul office where he met his wife. Together they moved to cover assignments in Overland Park and finally settled in Burlington for his job at the West Burlington Shops. Dave joined many model railroad clubs, usually one in every city he lived in and continued his membership long after he moved away including one lasting 55 years.
Dave was a generous man that believed in sharing material and did so freely in hopes his lifelong pursuit and contributions to the history of the railroads would be seen by all and not just a few. Dave was one of very few people that took his camera everywhere including his deployment to Vietnam where he photographed Vietnam railroad operations on steel ties and R&R in Japan.
