Hi all,
With the downfall now of seemingly most railroad-specific model paints,
and in particular ModelFlex's apparent recent demise(?), I'm casting
around for replacements for standard CBQ colours in acrylic. I have
seen the Dave Lotz's great Paint Shop spreadsheet and copy on the BRHS
site <
https://www.burlingtonroute.org/Qrailroad/modeling/painting.php>,
but those are listed mostly as ModelFlex paints, for which stock is now
very limited.
So I have been compiling lists of possible equivalences for Dave's
colours, using charts and tips from modellers I have been able to find
here and elsewhere on the Internet, but using currently available
acrylic paint from larger, non-railroad-specific, manufacturers -
currently Vallejo, AK Interactive, and SMS (a popular local Australian
manufacturer). I figure if I have colour matches from a larger
manufacturer that is not railroad-specific, the odds of those remaining
in production over time are increased.
Since MF's railroad paint was somewhat boutique outside of model
railroading however, not many model paint manufacturers today have
equivalence charts that include those, so I am hoping to locate some
old MF stock to do old-fashioned paint chip matching with the
contemporary paints. The MRH and MicroScale post-Floquil charts help a
little, but miss a number of important CBQ colours.
If anyone here has suggestions for what they use for standard CBQ
colours from contemporary paint manufacturers (in particular Vallejo,
AK or SMS) that they are happy to share, I'd be keen to add them to the
lists for paint chip matching, and of course share the results back
here as well. I'm mostly interested in pre-Chinese Red, but will
happily take suggestions for all standard Q colours and add them in.
Cheers,
Mike
Colours I am mostly interested in:
* Mineral Red
* Steam locomotive colours (in particular Smoke/Firebox Graphite and
Cab Roof Red)
* Doodlebug colours
* Pullman/Brunswick green
* Reefer Yellow
* Indian Red
* Bronze Green
Also, for completeness:
* Chinese Red
* Blackbird colours
* Greyback colours
* Deep Forest Green
* Cascade Green
* Omaha/MoW Organge
And any other standard CBQ colour.
