Said notices stated locomotive were to be referred as such or as units but definitely not as “motors”. Occasionally there were even corrections or chastisement on the radio for using the forbidden term.

That had been a “Q” term.

Ed is correct.  When I started a train, I always looked down at the ground to tell when I was moving.  We didn't have any E's or F's on the Alliance Division when I hired out, but all the motors had the ground lights.
