Rupert, IRM shadowlined am interurban in 1:1 scale. After which, I asked about doing it too our BA-19 #993. That is another subject. Santa Fe had cars shadowlined (notably the VALLEY cars). As did the SAL, StL-SF, the NC&StL and M-K-T (and Q). Pullman cars were given this scheme for use on the C&S, FtW&D, CRI&P and others. Dubin's Pullman Paint and Lettering Notebook has a page on it with a photo & it has a "paint chip" which shows the graduation of lines that produced the effect. If you look at the Newberry Library's Pullman collection they out to have the paint & lettering diagram for cars assigned to railroads that used the scheme. I believe at least some of the cars were painted in Richmond, CA. (the AT&SF rotated their cars (through shoppings) faster than most, and Richmond (Pullman Co. shop) did a lot of the work on the Pullmans assigned to AT&SF. The Shadowlined was simplified on a lot of roads such that, ultimately, Simulated Stainless Steel (SSS) became the end result (which is what we put on the 993) - the same roads above, plus SP, became a sizable group. One of the larger issues was that brushes in the car washers tended to ruin the effect. And once shadowlining gets grungy and/or worn, it can look rather tatty. I am not sure I indexed my images to indicate it (paint), I'll check. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
