On the subject of Trestles and Bridges. Check the track charts. While driving from Ft. Worth to meets in the St. Louis-Chicago area I would follow the old MKT across Oklahoma and it was full of wood trestles in an area of dry country subject to FIRE! Over the years now UP they replaced the wood with concrete and or steel piles or piers. On both the Main Line (Aurora to Galesburg) and C&I (Aurora to Savanna) NO wood trestles. They were all over the years filled with box culverts at the bottom or made of concrete piles with concrete section bridges. Yes there are some steel bridges but they are L O N G spans. Less maintenance. Less MOW track time so easier to run trains. The wood bridges on branch lines was often the case to get rid of the branch after a weak bridge (often burned) was not cost effective to replace. ie. Baker Main south out of Earlville. Steve in SC

Thank you Richard, Doug, Fred, Ken, James, Phil, et al: I am not a model railroading purist but I do like to create scenes that are somewhat believable. I was having problems with my swing bridge meeting up with a steel trestle as I thought nobody would build a swing bridge adjacent to a steel trestle bridge but CB&Q has proved me wrong (or right, as the case may be). I had checked out both Quincy and Burlington on Google Earth to try to locate the bridge but without success. Thanks to all the responses I realized that the photo was looking south (not north as I had somehow thought). I was able to go back to Quincy and found out exactly where this swing bridge used to be. And, best of all, some of the extra images from the responses also gave me a better clue as to just how the swing bridge and steel trestles meet up. So I'm back at the modelling bench with renewed enthusiasm and tons of gratitude Brian Walsh
