Don't forget about the use of full-color heralds on the steam locomotives!

I would offer that in my review the herald with a red border had extremely limited us in the 1940’s. Maybe on heralds on buildings. Right now I cant think of any multicolor heralds prior to to the 1958 release of the totally new paint schemes.

Ill let others with more expertise delve into when the multi colored heralds was applied to steam loco tenders.

A search of the photos on the members only section of the BRHS site should be enlightening.

The official colour, according to the 1940 trade mark, is “Burlington Route Trade Mark Border Red paint No. PPG-46703”, with the note that colour samples can be obtained from the Chief Engineer at Chicago.

PPG apparently is Pittsburgh Plate Glass which manufactures paints, etc.

Hi folks,

Getting into the weeds here.

On the rectangular logo with the red border, I've seen several different shades of red used, from a burgundy to a bright, almost monochromatic red. My basic question is, what color is correct?

Did the red used change over the years? Was there an "official" color? Was it always the Chinese red of the later diesel scheme, or...? I'm particularly interested in the red used in the 1940's.

Any info would be appreciated.

Mark P.
