Thank you Leo.  Always good to hear from a real railroader!

The weighing process that you describe was, and may still be the norm.  Certainly on a small installation in the 1950s as shown in Coal Train.  Thank you for sharing your experience.

Jim

Jim,

I enjoy your realistic operations and awesome modeling. One comment I would make about this current video is that your weighing methodology is not what I experienced on the Chicago & Aurora div. In IL.

When weighing cars, once the live rails were lined a car short enough to fit on the scale was shoved up onto it,then uncoupled and the car to be weighed was alone on the scale by itself with nothing coupled to it. Then the weights in the scale house were moved until balanced and the scale ticket printed. Once that was done the car was shoved off the scale and it rolled a bit down the track, then the next car centered on the scale, uncoupled and weighed. This process continued until all the cars were weighed. Then everything was coupled back together.

If a car was too long to fit on the scale rails one end was weighed at a time, then the combined weights added together. So often each car went through two setups on the scale.

Here is the latest operations-oriented video on the HO scale Colorado & Southern Ry , “Coal Train”, episode 12.

https://youtu.be/kFkYunDLc30

The C&S Ry Northern Division runs out-and-back trains to service local coal mines every day. These "coal turns" run as Extras, dodging all the scheduled trains as they switch their cars out on the Main .

Today we are called for the Valmont Turn, a daily mine run that delivers coal to the Valmont Power Plant. Enjoy the action as we load our hoppers at Coalton, weigh them out in Louisville , and swap them for empties at Valmont. Eight hoppers loaded, six trains met, with zero flagmen lost...

This eventful five hour run can take much longer. It's easy to see why it's a favorite with C&S crews.

I hope you enjoy it!

Please watch, like and subscribe!  Thanks.
