The Western Star was a secondary train that stopped in Aurora to take on commuters to Chicago, while the Empire Builder did not. I rode the Western Star (not sure of the exact date-but probably in the mid to late 1950s) from Aurora to Chicago. The car assigned to commuters was a very old (1900 era) wood? coach with gothic windows and similar period designs inside. (the car was probably steel sided, but clearly dated from around 1900). It was a trip into the past. This particular car was probably put on specifically for the commute crowd. I don't recall the rest of the consist-probably streamlined equipment.
