Thanks Jim,

I actually was a yard conductor for a few years, but never encountered a slack adjuster.  I had an idea that's what it might be because I know they existed. If I had been a carman I might have known.  

Now I'm curious as to why I've never noticed one of these before.  Did all boxcars in that era have slack adjusters?  Were they mounted out of view on some cars?
