Michael,
Car 10278 was an unassigned car (free runner in Q parlance) in the CB&Q
1968 Equipment Assignments. Nothing about being assigned to an SP&S
location. However, cars 10280-10284 and 10288-10289 were assigned to
Boise Cascade loading in Attalia, WA, on the NP. Cars 10270-10279 were
all unassigned.
By January 1970, car 10278 was assigned to Libby Owens Ford in Ottawa,
Illinois. I assume in glass service. Cars 10270-10279 were all assigned
to Libby Owens Ford in Ottawa at that time.
The car series it is from were built 1965. It was Class XM-6 which
indicates no loading devices or bulkheads. The only special feature the
car had was Pullman-Standard's Hydra-Cushion underframe.
One thing I've found looking through these two car assignment lists I
have is that newer cars changed customer assignments more than one would
think.

One of the 60' cars that the BRHS did in 1999 had a return when empty
stencil for the SP&S in Portland, OR. This car also did not have a
stripe on the door. I believe this is the same car that appears in
Morning Sun's CB&Q color guide to freight cars. Two questions about
this particular car:
1. Does the lack of a stripe on the door specifically mean that this
car was NOT in auto parts service?
2. Is anyone aware what industry utilized this car in Portland, OR? It
looks like Owens had a glass factory in Portland, OR. I wondered if
the Q was supplying cars since the SP&S didn't have 60'ers of their
own and since Owens was a good customer of the Q elsewhere on the system?
As always, any information helps. Thank you.
