Tom,

Could the 76250 car been "dressed up" for the class photo?

Update to my earlier post:

I looked throughout BB12 but forgot to look at the cover!! The cover shows a string of new BREX 76250-76349 PC&F 44' steel ice reefers at the PC&F Renton plant in the Simplified Script scheme I mentioned earlier. No black grabs, ladders or hinges. The closest car with a readable number is BREX 76283. However, the photo of the first car of the order, BREX 76250 shown on BB12 page 24, has black painted ladders, grabs, and plug door hardware! That's what threw me. So somewhere in between 76250 and 76283 they dropped the black trim (my guess is with 76251!) One thing that did continue with the Simplified Script cars is the Lt Wt and New date being in white on a dark (brown or maroon I'd guess) background. This is not the case on the Accurail cars, but I imagine could be added with decals.

The photo of BREX 76000, a 44' steel ice reefer also shown on BB12 page 24, is also in the same Simplified Script scheme as 76250-76349. 76000-76249 were built by FGE-Indiana Harbor in 1951, a year before the PC&F cars, and since the Class car 76000 does not have black hardware, the Simplified Script definitely started by 1951.

The question now goes back to the 1949-1950 FGE-Indiana Harbor built steel reefers series 74200-74399. These had swing doors and are the ones that appear to have been all delivered with the black painted hardware. There is a photo on BB12 page 21 of 74398 and 74399, the last two cars of the series, with black hardware. So first thought would be these all came with black hardware, but 74398 and 74399 were two "experimental" cars with permanently mounted underslung charcoal heaters. So I'm not assuming that all the cars got the black trim - maybe these two special cars got it, but somewhere in between the Q went to the Simplified Script scheme without the black trim.

So back to the quest for a photo of a 74200-74399 series car (swing doors) in the Simplified Script scheme. Anyone have one?
