Progress Report on my LMB S-2a project…

 

The model is back from my repair/mod guy, Jan Willard.  You can see the “pump and a half” configuration and the extra cooling coil piping on the engineer’s side, and the backhead in the cab.  Jan dilled out and replaced the nasty rivets holding the rods in place, and installed a PSC gearbox and a Faulhaber motor.  The model now runs flawlessly—quiet, smooth, and powerful.  The decal artwork is done, but I need to fill the artwork sheets before going to print, so painting is still a ways off yet—probably 1Q23.

 

Except for the rivet issue (which added a lot of labor hours to Jan’s work on this model), I can state that the transformation in running qualities with the PSC gearbox and Faulhaber motor is highly satisfying to me, and worth the cost.  Unfortunately, the OEM gearbox cannot be swapped out without dealing with the rivet issue.  I just know whether LMB used rivets on all of these models.  Check your model carefully before considering a gearbox swap, because if you have a model with rivets, the cost will be much higher than if your model has screws! 

 

Where I’m eventually headed with this is for it to pull a modest (5-6 car) train of the Aurora Shops cars.  That’s future Eric, but milestones like you see here keep me stoked in the meantime.
