The person that can really answer your questions about this video is Hol
Wagner, who is a member of the BRHS and lives in the Denver area. He was around
for many of the trips out of Denver where these videos appear to have been
taken. From my records, I can offer the following information concerning the
4960 trip. The coal loading scene is likely the 7th Street shop in Denver. The
video was taken prior to October 18, 1963. On that date, 4960 collided with the
rear end of passenger train no. 28 at Douglas, WY. While the locomotive was not
seriously damaged, the original cast headlight bracket was destroyed. The shop
making the repairs didn’t have an original bracket available and custom made a
new bracket which positioned the headlight 3 or 4 inches higher. In the video,
the headlight is in the original position.
No. 4960 made three trips out of Denver prior to that date. The first was May
11, 1963 Denver to Colorado Springs and was sponsored by the Rocky Mountain
Railroad Club. The second trip was the next day, May 12th, but it only pulled a
short train with a business car of the rear. That trip went from Denver to
Boulder, Longmont, Ft. Collins and return. The third trip was the day before
the accident and ran from Denver to Cheyenne and return on Sunday, October 13,
1963. Based on the scenery, the season and the train, I believe the video of
4960 is that October trip.
I haven’t had a chance to research the 5632 video yet, but it is also a trip
out of Denver and looks like it ran north to Loveland, CO to connect with a
trip on the Great Western Railway with their locomotive 2-10-0 no. 90. I will
check my fan trip records to see if I can find a date or dates for such trips.
As mentioned Hol Wagner knows much about the activities in the Denver area and
I am sure will respond with more accurate information.
