Thank you, Dave. Looks like the interior in your photo may have been painted a light gray, as Jim Cunningham said in his response, but years of smoke, grime and what have you seems to have overlayed everything with black.

I read some railroads whitewashed roundhouse interiors, which seems counter-intuitive. Years ago in Mainline Modeler, John Nehrich wrote a piece on why 19th Century retail shops on Main Street had such large front windows (and sawtooth windows on factory roofs). He said it was to compensate for poor interior lighting from gas or early electricity. You can see the darkkness at the rear of stores in period photos. Perhaps whitewashed or light grey roundhouse interiors was for the same purpose.
