Bob - Timber roundhouses were painted mineral red on the exterior. Brick roundhouses were unpainted natural brick. Brick from difference sources would have different colors. Timber doors and occasionally window frames were painted some shade of blue/green. As for the interiors, with the exception of the foreman's office and interior crew quarters, I'll speculate that the frugal Q left them unpainted as they'd soon be all heavily sooted-up anyway.
I just remember roundhouse interiors as being "black" may be with the exception of the Lincoln roundhouse that was of partial concrete construction. What I remember of the foreman's offices and interior crew quarters, they were all painted a light industrial green but soon sooted-up, too. I've attached color images of the Aurora and Galesburg roundhouse exteriors. For your roundhouse modeling purposes, you might just use lamp black on the interior to represent the soot - Louis
