David,
The Milwaukee branch was the Racine and Southern. Once the trains exited at Steward Junction, they went to Ladd, IL - passing through Mendota, They had other trackage rights that got them to the towns of De Pue, Hennepin, Mc Nabb, and Oglesby. One train each way daily, in my era of 1950, pulled by L-2 Mikado's.

I'm especially intrigued by all the differences between then and
now. The diagram shows there was a left-to-right crossover between
Flag Center and the CNW crossing; was that remote controlled or
hand throws? Was that a bit farther east than the current
right-to-left CTC crossover at CP 844? I also keep trying to
visualize where the Milwaukee track went when it split off at
Steward Junction.
I'm sure I'll also dig my brain into other places, like Waterman
and Hinckley, when I'm awake enough to study them.

Rich,
Hello, my name is Brandon Otterstrom. I am a Signal Technician with BNSF and the C & I is part of my territory. I have extensive knowledge of how the CTC signal system of the very section of railroad you are modeling was set-up and worked, and I would be glad to help you understand. To answer a couple of your questions: the Steward to Flag Center section was CTC'ed in 1929 exclusively with searchlight signals. Signals were controlled from a machine at Rochelle via direct-wire. West of Flag Center to Savanna Tower was CTC'ed in 1946 and/or 1947 using searchlight signals at controlled-points and color-light signals at the intermediate signal locations. Control of this section was via the machine at the Aurora depot with controls/indications being delivered/received by a DC time-code system. I have attached a file containing three articles covering the CTC system for the C & I and one article describing the two-wire reversible system that was subsequently used in the Flag-Savanna section. Also attached is a signal line diagram covering Aurora to Savanna. I hope this helps. Brandon Attachments:
