From NYC there were numerous options, but most likely were the New York Central or the Pennsylvania. Both ran overnight trains to Chicago, departing in the afternoon with next morning arrival. Both the NYC 20th Century Limited and the PRR Broadway Limited took 16 hrs 30 minutes in 1935.

Subject: Re: [CBQ] trip duration in the 1930s - NYC to Billings, MT
looking at my Burlington 1934 TT, I show the following:
Depart Chgo at 10:30 AM on the Aristocrat
Arrive Denver 7:00 AM the next morning 1034 miles
Dept Denver 7:45 PM on train 29
Arrive Billings 6:00 PM the next evening, 670 miles
There may be different routes through Omaha or Lincoln, but this is the start of your search. Or some other route on the Great Northern or Northern Pacific from Chicago.
I was wondering how long a trip from NYC to Billings, Montana would probably have taken in 1934. Not sure which route they took from NYC to Chicago, but definitely the Burlington from there to Billings, MT.
Thanks a lot for your help!
