Gary,

CB&Q Waycar 13855 was built at Aurora, Illinois, in November 1917. It was retired and donated May 18, 1964 to Dodge Park in Council Bluffs. It moved to the museum in September 1999.  It is a Class NE-8 30' Wood Waycar of which 95 were built. They were numbered 13924-13830. Cars were numbered downward as they were built. Waycar 13924 was built in December 1915 with the last in the series 13830 being built in March 1918. Only 25 cars in this series were left at the time of the BN merger. There are a number of color pictures of these waycars in this class in Milepost 206 book The Burlington Waycars.

There are basic drawings of several of this class in the Milepost 206 book The Burlington Waycar Drawing Book.

A friend at the Historical Society of Pottawattamie County (Iowa) asked me to check with you knowledgeable folks about CB&Q Waycar #13855.  It’s in their collection at the RailsWest Railroad Museum in Council Bluffs.

The waycar is one of the oldest artifacts they have, but it’s not in good shape, having been outdoors with low or no maintenance for a long time.  They’re considering applying for a grant to help with costs of rehabilitating the car.

One question in the grant application asks, “Give a concise history of the item(s) or artifact(s) which is (or are) the subject of your application and explain the historical importance.”

How rare are cars like this one?

Any suggestions on finding the history of this waycar?  It’s listed on the BRHS website roster, but would a deeper historical perspective be available somewhere?  Or perhaps they could borrow wording written towards similar grants elsewhere?

I told him I’d check into this.  Suggestions?  Thanks!
