Rupert and All-

I don’t think it really was “returned to the Burlington”….just not needed on the North Coast Limited.

Without going into research mode I seem to recall that some of the ownerships of GN, NP and Q cars did change but that was probably due to adjust capital share to revenue splits on the joint trains.

By the time the car was painted silver it had lost its skirts on the observation end making it one very ugly car….even more so than the original Lowrey deep “bibb” stripe which IMHO was not very attractive.

Glen and Bryan

Thanks for your responses and information. It all goes to prove that you can’t believe all that you read.

I presume that 483 would have been repainted fairly soon after it was returned to the Burlington.

Thanks again

Rupert,

In 1953-1954 the NCL cars were painted into two-tone Lowey green from the original pine tree scheme. Concurrent with this, the sleeper-observation-lounge cars had the names removed and replaced by the car numbers. At no time did the cars carry both a name and a number on the outside of the car. I'm surmising that is where the confusion stems from in your sources. The 483 continued to be assigned to the NCL and an assignment sheet dated July 10, 1958 shows the 483 in the pool with NP 394 held at Seattle for protection. Further, a consist of Train No. 25 departing St. Paul on June , 1962, has 483 carrying the markers. It lasted on the NCL until the sleeper-observation-lounge cars were taken off during April/May 1967. It was at this time it went back to the Q where it was then painted aluminum and used as needed. This information comes from Bill Kuebler's book on the NCL.
