Ken,

While going through a CBQ handbook titled RULES AND INSTRUCTIONS GOVERNING MAINTENANCE OF WAY AND STRUCTURES, I came upon a section
referred to as CLASSIFICATION OF LINES which is divided into three sections Class 'A, B and C' Lines.
Examples of each as follows;

CLASS A

• Aurora-St. Paul
• Galesburg-Quincy
• Galesburg-Savanna
• Denver-Lyons

CLASS B

• Aurora-Streator
• Vermont-Rushville
• Quincy-Hannibal
• Osceola-Des Moines

CLASS C

• Aurora-West Batavia
• Oregon-Mt. Morris
• Fort Madison-Birmingham
• Indianola Branch

My assumption is that the depot designation refers to the size of the depot determined by Class usage of the line, with more traffic requiring larger depot.
Nothing was written to verify the assumption, but kind of makes sense.
