The idler car issue reminded me that the Burlington operated a ferry across the Ohio River in 1915, pending the construction of the bridge to complete the track between Metropolis and Paducah. I haven’t come across any photo of the ferries, described in the article as double-track decks scows hauled by tugs. The terminology suggests that there was more than one in operation.


According to the 1915-16 Directors’ Annual Report, the CB&Q owned 3 tugs, 47 barges, car floats and canal boats and 11 other items of floating equipment.
