Typical of state or local historical societies, they have badly missed the date of this image.  They date it to 1887 but the reweigh date on the boxcar is 12-06.

18319 was from the group 18010-18509, built by the Michigan Car Company in 1885 with an outside length of 34’ and 7’ inside height. According to the 1885 ORER, they were designated as “Lumber & Furniture to be run exclusively between Chicago and points on CB&QRR and its Western Connections, and special efforts must be made to load them promptly towards Chicago in preference to common cars”. In 1887, their function as listed in the ORER had changed to box car. They were classified as XM-1 when classes were introduced in 1910-11 and lasted on the roster until 1915. Some of them were converted to beer cars in 1906-7.
