Also to add to Steve’s comments don’t forget to include rain, snow and wind into the factors. All effected train performance.
The old heads said these extras were run as “extra norths” with everything out of Cicero except the yard office.
Thanks Steve, Leo, and Tristan,
Yes, I am very much aware that weather, etc. will affect loco performance and the tonnage ratings are just guidelines/suggestions. My main point was that a single unit on these trains would almost certainly require a 6-axle, but I know that was up to the power department, what's available, etc. I'm just trying to see if anyone recalls any of these "extra norths" and if so, what power do they recall seeing on them?
I also am not sure I got my answer on whether these ran "around the horn" heading back to Savanna and StP/Mpls. Did they?
I'm seriously thinking of adding a Savanna to Mendota extension to the layout (it will work) and a Denrock to Galesburg link as well. So I'm very interested in the trains/power on the line. E.g., I know the loaded Q ore trains to Chicago ran "around the horn" to Chicago, and the ore trains to Granite City, IL would have run Savanna-Denrock-Galesburg. So there is more for my operation if I add the extensions.
