I'm going to guess that this photo is taken at about current MP 334.1, on the short tangent between the two reverse curves east of the Chariton depot.
At first glance the train appears to be running wrong main or against the current of traffic. If my location is correct and the photo was taken in 1895, then the train was actually running with the current.
The first section of second track constructed between Monroe (Halpin) and Chariton was in 1879, and was about 2.7 miles up Russell Hill, which is ascending westward. Because the original grade was so steep, the second track was located up to several hundred
feet to the south in order to provide a more favorable westward grade. The original north track was not relocated at that time, so the south track was used as the westward track and the operation was made left-handed up the hill, and eventually the entire
distance between Monroe and Whitebreast. The operation remained left-handed until 1905 when a second south track was constructed east of Russell to replace the original north track. If you look on google earth, you can pick out the original north track,
which is visible roughly from MP 323.5 to MP 326.
This left-handed operation was one of the reasons for the early (1884) construction of interlocking tower 310 at Monroe, since even more trains than in later years were required to switch tracks at that location.

Yes, that's definitely an 1890s era photo.

A coworker gave me this copy of a photo and on the back is written CB&Q Chariton, IA 1895. Curious if anyone can tell if the equipment actually dates back that far. Thanks.
