Good question and I do not have an answer for you.  I do not know how the cars were financed.   The traditional way would be an equipment trust and the details involved.  The Q did handle traffic for a two to four year period (1965-1968 model years) until the FAST and ARRO trains were finally put on.  I do know that Ford "credited" the Q hicubes instead of asking for new auto rack cars. Ford also did that in the BN era for some Q 60ft box cars along with some additional routings.  Another thing to remember is that the CB&Q did not have any automobile unloading facilities.  It did have access to the NP ramp at Laurel, MT and the FW&D had access to the Houston Belt and Terminal ramp in Houston.  Another subject, another day.

Did the Q actually benefit from actual traffic of the auto parts cars (86 footers) over its' territories/ Or did they only get per diem fron the cars?

Fred - Such an article would be perfect for either the BRHS Bulletin or Zephyr - Louis

After several weeks of research and trying to recall some of details on the who, what, where and why of CBQ 86ft High Cube Box cars I have finally got it done.  It was 56 years ago (1964) that the cars were built.  With 20/20 hindsight it appears to have been a poor investment but at the time the Burlington had no choice.  The positive side is that it wasn't that many cars and we did not lose as much as several other railroads.

If your interested I can put together something about 60ft parts cars, frame flats, and some very different bi-level auto racks that the Burlington had.
