I did the three unit version of this several years ago, I used two PDT trucks in the center, leaving
the two ends un-powered, I did run jumpers between the two power trucks and that did wonders
for power pickup.  It will not climb any mountains, but other then that it runs nicely.

EDIT: they may have been Spud trucks, anyway they came from NWSL.
