The nice thing about old newspapers is they lifted stories from other papers.  Railroads were a hot topic in the 1800's.  The following appeared in the January 6, 1880 Weekly Pella Blade:

"A fatal accident occurred on the C. B. & Q. railroad west of Ottumwa on the night of Dec. 26 (1879).  A freight train broke into two sections while going down grade.  A brakeman named Howard was on the front section putting on brakes when the accident occurred, and could not let them off fast enough to allow the engineer to keep out of the way, of the cars, which came crashing into the front end of the train with such force as to throw Howard off, killing him, and smashing up five or six cars loaded with grain."

Just imagine running across the top of runaway cars during December.  Weather was not mentioned.  It was not a job for the timid.
