Ken

That may have been 9769 or 9735 on the Southern Iowa – later Southern Industrial. After that company folded,
the railroad and the two rail cars were bought at auction by the Oscar Gavronski Culvert Co in Centerville IA, and Trans Northern bought them from that concern. Trans Northern operated the Keweenaw Central Railway and 9735 ran there before being sold to the Minnesota Transport Museum. 9769 had its diesel engine removed, and was sold to Sperry Rail Service in June 1971 where it was converted to a rail test car or more likely used as spare parts.

I was a tech student at Centerville Community College in Centerville, IA from 1965 to 1967.  Our tech building was right across the street from the Southern Iowa.  I remember that they quit using electric traction for the trains and were using a Burlington motorcar.  I wasn't taking pictures yet in those days.  Stupid me.  The one advantage with the SIR using the Burlington motorcar was the rotary convertor wasn't turned on.  Our college ham station dipole antennas were parallel to the overhead wire and the rotary convertor would knock out all signals on the low bands.
