Tom,

Old wood box cars were used for company sand service. That could be for locomotive sand or used elsewhere.
For example, one night in the midnight shift in the west yard at Eola there was a freezing rain storm, and I do mean storm. Ice was thick on the cars, hanholds, pinlifters and on the ground. It was simply unsafe to work. The foreman went to the yard master and told him we couldn’t work any longer w/o sound footing.
The foreman also happened to be yard men’s unions local chairman. The section men were called, we dug out an old outside braced box painted company service orange and spent the rest of the shift moving slowly around the yards with the section men shoveling sand out of the car doorways.

Also note that prior to company service orange company service cars were just restencilled from service.

I know from photos that the CB&Q used old boxcars as sand houses. For example, the centerspread on pages 32-33 of BB 59 shows the engine facility at Hastings, NE and the silver sand tower is right next to a double door boxcar with no trucks which is painted silver.

My main interest is Savanna Yard. There was clearly what appeared to perhaps be a partially buried boxcar (next to the sand tower) that served as the sand house. I ran across what is possibly the best view of it I have found that shows detail and that it is clearly an old boxcar. Here is the link on eBay:

You can clearly see a door put in the end of the boxcar, and it is clearly an re-used baxcar when you look at the end of the car and can can also see the remnants of the roofwalk support. Next to it is an outside braced boxcar that also shows up in other photos I have found of the 1961 fantrip for 5632.

Can anyone identify either of the boxcars? I would like to recreate the sand house as accurately as possible.

Would the outside braced boxcar behind the sand house be used to bring sand to the facility? (That's what I am thinking.) If so, any thoughts on what Class of car it is? I have a color photo from a different angle that shows the outside braced boxcar to be mineral red with a flat door. The door has the Everywhere West slogan on it.
