Phillip,

That is a true story. I was going to mention it in my comment, yesterday, but I could remember which trip the incident occurred on. I know it was on the C&I. However, looking at photos, I am pretty sure it was the 5631 trip on October 6, 1957. For that trip, a Vista Dome car (I think it was the original pattern dome) was placed immediately behind the tender of 5631. As usually, the Q had piled coal quite high in the tender. Somewhere along the way, some coal bounced out of the tender and one lump headed straight back along the tank and the dome car and smashed into the center window of the dome, shattering the outer pane of glass. I remember being up in the dome and looking at the broken window afterwards, and wish today, that I had taken a photo of it. In the digital age with better cameras, I am sure I would have along with a number of other people! Prior to that trip, a Minnesota Railfans trip with 3003 out of Minneapolis, was also operated with a dome car immediately behind the locomotive, but I don’t think there was any issue. After the 5631 experience, most subsequent fan trips, particularly with coal burning locomotives, had a baggage car placed behind the locomotive.

Hello Dave, Bill and All -

I have a few photos (b&w and color) from that trip at Savanna and at Galena.
The story is told that, when the 5631 got up to speed, coal bounced out of the tender and smashed the front windows on the dome car.  Probably how oil-burner 5632 got the fan trip work thereafter.    PAW
