Thread-topic: [CBQ] NW2 BN536 (CB&Q 9239) Paint Scheme
I have to at least partially agree with Tom on this.  But I believe the entire hood -- both sides -- was repainted post-merger with the 1968-69 simplified switcher scheme, as the 1972 view clearly shows the white "nose" stripes on both sides.  And the red/yellow stripes separating the black from the gray are still on the cab, even the front, so it was not touched.  Another anomaly:  The "g" in the "Burlington" lettering is too high.  Compare it with the photos of 9232 and BN 513 attached.  Perhaps just as odd is the fact that 9239 survived to the 1970 merger with the original style red and yellow side sill stripes intact and never received the diagonal Scotchlite delineator strips that reduced the red and yellow stripes to narrow strips along the top of the sills.

In the months following the merger there were many small shops around the new BN system that were slow in getting painting/lettering diagrams, stencils and even Cascade Green paint to enable them to do full repaints.  And when a unit required repainting, or at least partial repainting due to an accident or some other mishap, some oddities appeared.  Perhaps the oddest was BN 161, formerly Q 9270 and originally part of an EMD cow/calf/calf demonstrator of the same number.  It was repainted at Alliance by a painter who clearly had all the necessary materials to do a correct repaint, but was presumably an old Q man who wanted something to recall the unit's Q heritage.  See attached image.  It carried this paint scheme for five years or more.  And of course there's FW&D NW2 605 in Chinese red, but that has nothing to do with the BN merger -- though I might note that I submitted a Chinese red switcher scheme suggestion to Al Rung of the Q's PR department in 1964 and received a cordial reply that the railroad was quite happy with its black and gray scheme for switchers.  And guess which switcher my suggested scheme depicts:  9270!

Tim,

Great find! I think the unit may have had BURLINGTON painted on the right side and EW on the left! Notice that the front hood stripes on the right side are the late 60's switcher scheme white, not the usual gray with red outline front stripes associated with the earlier scheme switchers. To me, it looks like the left side stripes are the later scheme white as well.

The early EMD switchers came with gullwing doors along the top edge of the hood above the engine that opened upward toward the center so you could swap engine power assemblies. The entire hood removed in one section and was bolted to the frame. So while it is conceivable that the entire hood was switched at some time, it doesn't explain why the left side appears to have the late white hood stripes. The again, the left side also has not only the EW logo but as you mentioned, the yellow/red separation stripe. So it's not like the paint crew just used the wrong side logo (EW instead of BURLINGTON). The again, maybe after one crew painted the front hood stripe, the used two different painting diagrams for the right hood vs. the left hood? Interesting indeed!
