I remember hearing stories that back in the day when waycars were assigned to individual conductors, the crews would do things to the waycar to make it easier
to pick out in a line of waycars. Maybe this was someone’s way of marking their waycar that just held over…

Yes, I saw that too, and having grown up on a farm in the 1960's never really gave it a second thought. Looks like a 'Slow Moving Vehicle' emblem to me. All
of our farm machinery had them mounted on the rear of the machine, visible to approaching motorists. My guess is that it is some conductor's (or just somebody's) attempt at additional safety. Even tho it would appear that the ones on the waycar are not reflectorezed.
Google 'Slow Moving Vehicle emblem' and that will explain it in more depth.
