Duncan,
You can clearly see the contrast between the black roof of the original structure and the light roof of the new construction. When they added the addition to the original newer portion, they clearly covered the old, black portion of the roof. It sure looks like they made an effort to use some sort of heat reflecting material, but this was in 1948.
