1941 Roundhouse photo shows a recessed cinder pit track next to the ash pit.  You can see the Gondola below level next to the steam engine on the inbound roundhouse track

Not an expert on much regarding these types of things,  but if it were an ash pit would there not be an opening in one side for a conveyor of sorts for loading into a gondola?
