Tom - Only the really large engine terminals such as Galesburg and Lincoln had mechanized ash pits.  The rest of the pits at smaller terminals would've been shoveled out by hand.  First out of the pit onto the adjacent ground, then from the ground up into a waiting gon.  Labor was very cheap in that era - Louis
