Thanks Hol, If its not an ash pit, I sure have no idea either. One thing I’m sure of is that it looks like rails ran through it.

While it does look a lot like a cinder pit, the use of wooden ties for one was extremely uncommon, for obvious reasons. Rails were usually fastened onto steel I-beams currning the length of the
pit and supported on steel and concrete posts. But if it's not the ash/cinder pit, I sure don't have a clue what it might be.

In researching the old structures at Ferry Nebraska (South Sioux City) I came across this item in the photos. The base of it is partially buried and runs about 50 yards long. It’s in line with the old inbound roundhouse track and just
north of where the water & coal tower sat. You can still see partial ties with large bolts & nuts protruding through Would this have been the ash pit?
