Could have been a cinder pit that was filled in after the need was over. Then it would have ties when filled in. Or a scale pit. Or an inspection pit. Maybe looking at old Sanborn or other maps might clue one in.

Scott - Here's an educated guess.  If there had been a RIP (repair in place) Track for inspecting/repairing freight cars on that location, then the filled-in pit would've been used for examining the underside of freight car trucks and car bodies. Since Sioux City was an important interchange point, it would make sense that the Q maintained a RIP track at the yard - Louis

Subject: [CBQ] Yard Structure help

In researching the old structures at Ferry Nebraska (South Sioux City) I came across this  item in the photos.  The base of it is partially buried and runs about 50 yards long.  It’s in line with the old inbound roundhouse track and just north of where the water & coal tower sat.  You can still see partial ties with large bolts & nuts protruding through  Would this have been the ash pit?
