The wooden tower in the image is the original 1893 tower, which was designated Tower R. We know where it was, because it appears on early station maps of Downers Grove. It was located at MP 21.426.
The manual block system was placed in service between Western Avenue and Downers Grove in early 1891 and extended to Aurora in the Fall of the same year. Downers Grove was designated as having a block cabin. I can only assume that from 1891 to 1893, the block
cabin was some building other than the tower, and it seems reasonable that the tower functioned as the block cabin after it was built.
The interlocking was extensively rebuilt in 1930 in conjunction with construction of the 4th main between Downers Grove and Eola, and the new brick tower was built about 300' west of the original tower, at MP 21.486.

Was this early (original?) tower at Downers Grove, also a considered signal cabin? This one, I believe, was located at the same site as the later brick tower was located. That would be MP 21.xx.
