Thread-topic: [CBQ] E7 with Shadow Lines
Thanks, Rupert and Rich. I'm going ahead with the fluting on an O gauge E7 as if it were new. 1948 to 1950 will fit fine in my time line.

In a discussion on the 2018 BRHS Calendar in January 2019, someone posted -

Apparently their "Zephyr Pit" diesel shop in Chicago was directed to experiment with the shadow lining on two of the older E-7 units that had not been fitted with stainless steel side batten panels. So the second E-7 unit, the 9924A (as stated per the photo caption on the back of a J. Michael Gruber "Mainline Photos" print of the unit at the Chicago Zephyr Pit in the fall of 1950) and the previously mentioned 9921B E-7 unit were the lucky recipients of the experimental paint scheme. Frequent washings and the resulting shadow line wear and tear made these schemes a one-time application, as was pretty much the case with the power cars, Pullmans and diners, with future repainting being in silver with no shadow lines.

Ray,

Like I said, though, there seems to be another unit (not 9921) that had the shadow stripe scheme.  I need to look for that photo.  I do love the ragged look of the paint scheme by December, 1950. That happens to be the period I'm modeling.  I'm going to try to imitate that "washed out" look with some aluminum over-sprays,  I can see why the shadow stripe scheme wasn't used extensively.

Rich,

You are correct. I posted this before looking at Bulletin 10. The shadow stripe was painted in 1948 and lasted 2 years after lots of washing that faded the striping. An it did not have the red striping on the sides.

Should have looked this up before I posted it.

Ray,

The original E-Unit Bulletin (#10) shows a very deteriorated shadow stripe paint scheme on 9921B on December 31, 1950.  The caption said it was re-painted shortly after into the standard scheme.  We had a discussion on the old list many years ago, where I acquired a photo that seems to indicate another unit was painted into this scheme.  I believe other people (Hol?) corroborated this fact.  I'll have to dig around for that photo.

I'm looking at modeling the E7 with shadow lines, #9921. I have a one photo of it but would like to find additional ones. It appears to me that the Q did NOT paint a red stripe on the upper part of the engine, as well as on the lower rivet line as well. The anti-climber also does not appear to have been painted in red.

I would assume that the nose and imitation grills, on the side of the upper head light, might be black, since the red side striping is missing.

I do have other photos of 9921 but without the shadow striping.

If anyone has information on this engine, I would appreciate it. Also, how long did it retain the shadow striping. Did the matching B unit also have the striping?

Thanks,
