To add to Rupert's information, there were only 57 left in the July 1963 ORER out of an original class of 1500. Nine cars were listed in the January 1966 ORER. Since they were built in 1925, I would be extremely surprised to see that one was repainted in Chinese Red. I expect if one of these cars needed anything beyond very minor repair they were retired.

11106 in your photo was an XA-8 which had its auxiliary door welded shut in 1946-1950, and was reclassified for AAR purposes as a box car as opposed to an auto car. In May 1967, there were just three of that class left – 11051, 12097 and one other. All three were on the roster 12 months later but the unknown car was gone by May 1969. However, come the February 1970 ORER, 11051 had been joined by 11106, the car in your photo, but 12097 was not mentioned.

The repainting of freight cars from box car red to Chinese red began in 1958, so either paint scheme was possible. You really need to find a dated photo of the car you are modelling to be certain which scheme it carried. For what it is worth, I can’t find an XA-8 in Chinese red among my limited photos.

Subject: [CBQ] CBQ XM-8 - 1967-87 Paint Scheme Question

Hi guys,

I'm working on an XM-8 that made it into the late 1960's (think like 1967/1968, about 8 left on the ORER.)

Does anyone know what paint scheme should be on this model for that timeframe? Below is a picture of the model along with one photo I have from the 60's, but unsure if its late enough.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
David Friedlander
