Hello Everyone,

Sorry about being late to this email.

During the height of the 1965 flood with both railroads at Lacrosse/Savanna were out of service and under water and the CNW at St Croix  was also under water, the only line east of the Twin Cities was the Soo.  Here is the route many trains followed: St Paul to the Soo  and on to Junction City, Wis. down the Milwaukee to New Lisbon and east to Milwaukee (past Duplainville) and onto Chicago.

Due to the Soo's limited track capacity, each railroad was allowed to run one passenger train and one freight train each day, both directions, over this detour during the flood. I know the Milw ran a 36 car passenger train during this detour..  I assume the Q also ran similar sized trains.

I got this information from the 1965 train sheets in the 1970's.  The 1965 flood was a very dynamic period for both the Q and the Milw.  the Q north of Lacrosse was out of service for about 6 weeks due to washouts.

When there was cause for rerouting passenger traffic on the river line (high water, derailments and the like) trains were sent up the Milwaukee Road, using its line from Chicago to Milwaukee to St. Paul.  Amtrak  ultimately chose this route for its version of the Empire Builder.  Jim Sandrin

The caption on this slide says its the Empire Builder in 1966 at Duplainville, IL. The tower is clearly marked Duplainville, and it is clearly a Q E-unit in the lead, but I can't find Duplainville, IL on a map. Anyone know where this is?
